- Metallica To Make 'Special Announcement' On Tuesday
Metallica will make a "special announcement" this Tuesday (February 7th) at 2:00 p.m. ET, according to a post at the band's official website. A teaser video posted at the site features text which reads, "You've seen them at festivals across the world. But you've never seen them . . . Tune in Tuesday, February 7 at 11 a.m. PST. Metallica.com." Metallica is known to have several potential projects or events in the works. Drummer Lars Ulrich hinted during the band's 30th anniversary concerts in December that the group would make an announcement in January about a special interactive fan event to take place in June. He told us a while back that there never seems to be enough time for the band to do everything it wants: "We always kind of have big picture ideas, we always look ahead, we always, you know, got all these balls in the air, and our application for 28-hour days has so far been rejected, so we're still stuck at 24. You know, there's only so much time." Ulrich told Rolling Stone last month that the band was "seven, eight songs" into the writing of its next album, adding that the songs on the new disc will be "shorter, more to-the-point" than the material on 2008's Death Magnetic. Meanwhile the band will play the 'black album' -- its 1991 self-titled fifth effort that has sold nearly 16 million copies -- in its entirety at selected European festivals this summer. Another looming project is a recently announced 3D Metallica movie, which Ulrich explained to Rolling Stone as a narrative feature film set against the backdrop of a Metallica concert. The band recently hired a Hollywood producer to work on developing the film.
- Coldplay Allows Latest Album To Stream On Spotify
Now that they've sold more than a million copies in the U.S. of their 2011 fifth album, Mylo Xyloto, Coldplay has given into popular demand and begun streaming the album at Spotify. Until now, the British quartet has not allowed this or any of its albums to appear on Spotify or any streaming sites. Now it's popped up on the Rdio streaming site as well as Spotify. Coldplay did not explain their initial decision to avoid streaming sites in the first place, which acts like the Black Keys and Adele have also skipped. The Keys told VH1 that they felt streaming sites were unfair to both artists and fans. In other news, Coldplay has also released an official music video for "Charlie Brown," the third single from Mylo Xyloto. The album has been nominated for three Grammy Awards and sold 447,000 copies in its first week of release. Coldplay will begin its first North American tour in nearly three years on April 17th in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, winding down on August 11th in St. Paul, Minnesota. The group is also scheduled to perform with Rihanna at the Grammy Awards this Sunday (February 12th).
- Soundgarden Album Pushed Back From Spring To Fall?
Soundgarden's new album will be released in the fall instead of this spring, according to Audio Ink Radio. The site reported that Cornell, in Australia with the band for a festival tour, told the country's Triple M radio about the change in plans. Asked what the record sounded like, Cornell replied that the set is neither "nostalgic," "retro," nor a return to the band's roots, adding, "I don't even know what that would be. Soundgarden has always been so eclectic. To me, it's a continuation or in a sense it's almost like picking up where we left off." The new album would be the band's sixth full-length studio set and first since 1996's Down On The Upside. The group disbanded in 1997. It's not surprising that the record's completion could be delayed. In addition to the Australian gigs, Soundgarden has European dates coming up. Cornell also took some time away for a solo acoustic tour of the U.S. last fall. Cornell is confirmed to play solo at a fundraiser for President Barack Obama's re-election campaign, scheduled for February 16th in San Francisco.
